Alright, I figured I should probably post a quick note here about how my time at my new job is going. eBay is, in short, one of the most massive technology installations I’ve ever been a part of. Actually, no… it is the largest, by far. I though Sun had large data centers? Nope. Hunter Douglas’ data center for the main SAP servers? Small time. Miniscule. The sheer number of servers, switches, load balancers, firewalls, database servers …. the list goes on. While I can’t get into specifics, all I can say is … holy shit.

I have alot of learning to do. There are a few skills I don’t have right now that I need to develop to be effective at my new role. This is going to be a challenging time, with lots of focus and effort on excelling. This job cannot afford to have some mediocre at the helm. It deserves (and I daresay, I should always strive for anyway) the best.

The sheer amount of information that is available to the TDO during his shift, in order to assist the role in troubleshooting the problems is … … words fail me. Statistical data on just about every single element in the entire infrastructure, trended over the last x weeks. And we’re talking millions of switch ports, VLANs, data processes, database connections.

Like I said, I’ve got alot to learn.
