I just don’t know. Every time I listen to this album I remember why I started listening to Phish in the first place. Although the discussion is of course disputable between individual Phishheads, this is the hands-down best album imho. There’s not a single bad song in the bunch, and several of them just shine out as diamonds amidst all the other precious stones. Not sure why I wanted to make special note of this now, but whatever.
So I’m going to resurrect my tank. It has been sitting essentially idle for almost 2 years now. Although it did still have a filter running, it has only room heating and lighting in all that time. The only word that comes to mind (although not technically correct) is Brackish. Read more

So upon leaving SUN, the beginning of the end of the stock options I received while working there happens. For those who don’t know … stock options work in four phases… grant, vest, purchase and expire. An option is granted on a particular date, at a particular price, on a particular vesting schedule, and will expire at a particular time. Read more
So my wife’s Mom is coming to visit later today, and staying for a week. This sort of thing always is preceeded by a tremendous effort to clean the house and make things reasonably presentable. Try to mix that in with trying to get enough sleep and still spending time with the other usual weekly activities, and you invariably fall short on something. In this case, sleep. Read more

So every once in awhile, a misdiagnosis of a problem is a godsend. A few nights ago, I was seeing problems on pebkac, so I logged in to take a closer look, and every single command I typed was failing miserably. Suspecting that the box had been rooted, I had the machine turned off until I could take a closer look and do the necessary cleanup and such. Read more
So a friend asked if I could host his domain for him. Sure, no problem. Do it all the time, whatever. But there’s a wrinkle… his ip address isn’t static. So generally that would lead down the road of engaging some service like dyndns to take care of you. However, these services generally cost money, and if you have several domains, that can get expensive fast. Read more

Ok, so I broke down and bought one. I got ‘Lumines‘ and ‘Mercury‘ for games, both puzzle style games. They’re both great, and promise hours and hours of time wasting goodness. I’ve heard complaints of dead pixels. I have none to speak of, unless I’m just not noticing them. The picture is crystal clear, and the sound is crisp and the scores for these two games is just great. I will continue my report as more data presents itself.
So I’ve finished with my 3 weeks in San Josie getting trained up. I think things have gone well so far, and the learning curve, while steep … is right up my alley. I definitely have some additional things I need to focus on, like the F5’s, and maybe some Oracle brushup. Oh, and dig deeper into the network topology stuff as well, but so far, I’m pretty happy with the progress.

I think I’m starting to get into the groove. I’ve been working tickets on my own now (with backup from the primary, obviously), and I’m starting to understand better what my role is, really. It hasn’t changed my accepting the fact that I still have a shitload to learn, but it does give me a better grasp of how things will generally flow day to day.

Reliable, fast Internet service seems to avoid me. When first I’m too far from the local CO to get the proper kind of service, then I’ve got an old router that doesn’t do routing properly. Then when trying to analyze the routing, and get a console cable working, it decides to release some of its magic smoke. Then my replacement router isn’t a new enough release to be supportable, and lo, $300 later, we’re back in business with a new router, and it appears all is well again.

Alright, I figured I should probably post a quick note here about how my time at my new job is going. eBay is, in short, one of the most massive technology installations I’ve ever been a part of. Actually, no… it is the largest, by far. I though Sun had large data centers? Nope. Hunter Douglas’ data center for the main SAP servers? Small time. Miniscule. The sheer number of servers, switches, load balancers, firewalls, database servers …. the list goes on. While I can’t get into specifics, all I can say is … holy shit.
