So every once in awhile, a misdiagnosis of a problem is a godsend. A few nights ago, I was seeing problems on pebkac, so I logged in to take a closer look, and every single command I typed was failing miserably. Suspecting that the box had been rooted, I had the machine turned off until I could take a closer look and do the necessary cleanup and such.
Thankfully, as it turned out, the problem ended up being a hardware issue, and given the older nature of the processor, mb and memory … I suppose this shouldn’t entirely shock me. In any case, this is a problem that money can solve. We’ll be seeing a nice little bump upgrade on pebkac shortly. Hopefully, I’ll be able to manage this with a minimum of downtime. I’m going to try to get away with not having to do a full blown reinstall, but instead, just a kernel recompile and away I go.

The only downside I can see to that is that everything currently compiled on the box won’t be taking advantage of the 64bit processor. We’ll see. I can always just slowly recompile stuff on the box as well once the rest of it is stable. More news as it presents itself…
